Star Trek Dreams

Well, it was inevitable, but I finally had my first dream about the new Star Trek movie coming out next May ... and boy, was it bizarre. Now, mind you, I'm not one for spoilers ... in fact, I hate them like poison ... but there's no way that anything I dreamt could possibly be in this movie.

Chris Pine was there as Captain Kirk. I met him in a shuttlepod and was pleasantly surprised to find him wearing a yellow command shirt, because, to date, none of his promotional photos have shown him thus accoutered. Oh, and he was wearing captain's braid on his sleeves ... or should I say cuffs ... but it was nothing more than loose-fitting rubber bands. Go figure.

On the subject of rank braid, I saw Chekov as a lieutenant, not an ensign, and Scotty as a commander with some kind of "golden leaf" on his cuff, which apparently gave him greater importance. Yeah, right, like Star Trek's "miracle worker" could be any more special than he already is.

On the dramatic front, the Enterprise ... or, rather, the saucer section ... was buried on top of a huge mountain, and all crew members had to scale the rock face via these huge, beanstalk-size vines to board the ship. However, Kirk and McCoy decided to get there in style: They had invisible rockets on their boots and simply shot upside the mountain ... but I think they got in trouble for it. Hmm ...

The Bridge of the Enterprise was like ... the lobby of a really swanky corporate headquarters, combined with a state-of-the-art military command center (like M had in Quantum of Solace). As I looked from the turbolift, I could see the red captain's chair in the center of the room, empty but clearly elevated from the rest of the "command well." I remember there being two floor-to-ceiling glass walls just outside the turbolift, and they were computerized, meaning they had fancy graphics and colored keys, and someone was using a stylus to draw curvy lines on one of them.

As I walked around the starboard side of the Bridge, I noticed that the area around the main viewer was surprisingly stark, spartan and dark. To the right was this room ... I asked if it was the Ready Room, but this woman behind a counter looked at me condescendingly, and then I smelled coffee and realized I was in a Borders cafe. Huh.

The ship's corridors were cramped, also spartan and completely devoid of any crew, probably because there was a "hall monitor" waiting to tell you to go back to your quarters and strap in. So, that's what I did. There were at least two other people in my room, but I don't remember anything about them. The room itself was very bright, with a walk-in kitchen to the right. The windows were straight ahead of me, and I saw colors swirling as we "took off" to find the rest of our ship. However, this was an Enterprise without inertial dampers, so when we launched, you could really feel it. Good thing I had "magnetically sealed" myself to the wall, just as the hall monitor ordered.

So that's it. There was more ... I remember some weird, cavernous room, but can't recall the rest.

This isn't the first time I've dreamt about a Star Trek movie prior to its release. I remember William Shatner quoting Janet Jackson ("All right, gimme a beat") during my Star Trek III: The Search for Spock dream, as well as a lady from my church talking about the story, whatever it was.

And the weirdness begins ...
